Regulation on Misfueling Controls for E15 Blends Expected Soon

Regulation on Misfueling Controls for E15 Blends Expected Soon

The Environmental Protection Agency is finalizing a regulation that will outline a new label at gas pumps where E15 is sold in attempt to prevent misfueling by cars and small engines that are incompatible with ethanol blends higher than 10 percent. NMMA has long contended that the rule, which has been in the works since last year, is not enough to address public confusion and protect consumers from engine performance failures, emissions control failures and safety issues that could result from misfueling. The risk of misfueling is especially high for boaters since 95 percent of recreational boats are less than 26 feet in length, making them towable and fuelable at regular automotive gas stations. Read NMMA's original comments on the rulemaking

Concrete Docks are Perfect Addition to Waterfront Property or Marina

Investing in an elaborate dock system is not something to balk at. With the introduction of the modern concrete docks, the dream of a beautiful and usable dock layout can now be a reality.

In the past, those who wanted to install their own concrete docks had to settle for heavy structural materials which are difficult to assemble. The main feature over the traditional dock system is that they’re easy to assemble and can be conveniently installed on any landscape. Concrete docks can be bought a complete package that includes delivery, deployment and installation of the floating dock structure on your waterfront property.

When buying a boat there are many different types and models to choose from so you really have to identify exactly what you need, and can afford. Your budget is the most restricting factor, but there are plenty of other issues to be raised such as the size of your family, where you intend to use the boat, fish or family boat. etc.

Federal Sales and Boat LoanTax Deduction

The Sales Tax Deduction

For boat owners who paid substantial state sales taxes on a new or used boat purchase last year, the Tax Extenders Act of 2008 signed by President Bush on October 3 continues to offer a federal tax benefit with a deduction for state sales taxes. Boaters must choose either the state sales tax deduction or state income tax deduction on their federal tax return -- you cannot take both.

In addition, to take the state sales tax deduction, the sales tax on a boat purchase must be applied at the same tax rate as the state's general sales tax. In order to claim the sales tax deduction, tax returns must be itemized. State sales taxes are entered on IRS form Schedule A, line 5b.

The Boat Loan Deduction

For those owners with a secured boat loan, mortgage interest paid on the loan may be deductible from your federal income taxes. Taxpayers may use the "second home" mortgage interest deduction for one primary home and one second home and must itemize deductions on their returns. A boat is considered a second home for federal tax purposes if it has a galley, a head, and sleeping berth.

Some boaters may be unaware of this potential tax benefit because not all lending institutions send borrowers an Internal Revenue Service form 1098 which reports the interest paid. Not receiving the form does not preclude taking the deduction. If a 1098 is not available, boaters should contact their lender for the amount of interest paid and should enter it on line 11 on Schedule A along with the lender's tax ID number. If a form 1098 is sent, boaters should simply enter the amount on line 10 of Schedule A.

Alternative Minimum Tax Phase-Outs

CRUISAIR® CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

Dometic Marine brand, Cruisair'", celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Founded in 1959 by Jere Crews, Cruisair is one of the world's premium brands of high-performance marine air-conditioning systems for pleasure yachts.
"Over the last 50 years, the Cruisair brand has developed a long-standing reputation for high-quality engineering and exceptional customer service," commented Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Marine. "From the very beginning, Jere employed a philosophy of bringing innovative products to customers backed by solid engineering standards. He then combined these high standards with the ability to provide technically trained service personnel anywhere in the world dedicated to customer satisfaction. By doing this, we have gained considerable respect within the marine community globally."

Today, Dometic's Cruisair brand remains at the forefront of the industry. With close to a million Cruisair systems installed over the years in yachts all over the world, Cruisair continues to offer the most complete product range on the market. From portable hatchtop air-cooled units for small vessels, to multi-ton tempered-water systems for yachts over 70 feet and every size air conditioner in-between, the company prides itself as a leading global supplier of marine air-conditioning systems.
Jere Crews, founder ofCruisair and pioneer of marine air conditioning in the U.S. added, "Fifty years ago, one of our toughest challenges was to develop the technology that would survive the harsh marine environment, as well as compliment other system installations. Since then, technology has moved on a long way, to the point that few boat owners in the warmer latitudes would consider going to sea without an air-conditioning system installed onboard."
