Mercury Marine has begun production on two new models, a in-line four ylinder 200 hp and an in-line six cylinder 300 hp, o its fuel-efficient, powerful and revolutionary Verado outboard line. The engines were introduced at the 2007 Miami International Boat Show, n February, and production began in June. The four-cylinder 200 hp Verado is the lightest 200 hp four-stroke outboard in the world. A perfect combination of weight and power makes this outboard spectacular for targeted applications, including freshwater aluminum boats, saltwater coastal bay and flats boats, and dual-engine offshore boats.
Mercury added the 300 hp six-cylinder to the Verado family because the growing trend toward larger boats requires more engine muscle. The introduction reinforces Mercury's leadership position in the offshore saltwater markets, where multiple-engine setups are common. Other target applications for the 300 hp are coastal bay and freshwater multi-species boats.
In tests conducted last month in Wisconsin, the 300 hp Verado was 1.3 seconds quicker from 0-30 mph and 4.1 mph faster at wide open throttle under heavy load than the Suzuki DF300 – the industry's only other 300 hp four-stroke outboard. Both engines were tested on a 23-foot center console boat. In addition, the Verado was significantly more fuel efficient, consuming up to 16 percent less fuel than Suzuki through the "cruise" range. At each engine's optimal fuel efficiency, the 300 hp Verado delivered 3.9 miles per gallon at 26.7 mph, while Suzuki's DF300 produced only 3.7 miles per gallon at a significantly lower speed – 22.1 miles per hour, a difference of 4.6 mph. Also, Mercury's 300 hp Verado delivers better performance with less noise than its competition. The Suzuki DF300 is noticeably louder at idle than the Verado 300, and is twice as loud as the Verado at wide open throttle.

In addition, Mercury recently announced significant enhancements to the models of the original Verado line, including increased fuel efficiency and power with the same remarkable reliability. Improvements to the power train give the Verado line world class fuel efficiency. Mercury tests show the new 150 hp Verado consumes 22 percent less fuel at wide open throttle and 18 percent less fuel at cruise than the 150 hp Verado introduced in 2005. In comparison to the competition, the new 150 hp Verado consumes up to 20 percent less fuel through the power band than the 150 hp Yamaha(1), up to 23 percent less than the 150 hp Suzuki(2) and up to 40 percent less than the 150 hp Evinrude E-TEC(3).
The enhanced power train features forged pistons, precision machined oil dams, eccentric grooved crankshaft main bearings, an all-new intake cam profile, and a new PCM (propulsion control module) calibration. In addition, all Verado engines now feature a polished chrome graphics package.
The new four- and six-cylinder Verado engines are available at authorized Mercury Verado dealers.
