Vessel Hull Design Protection Act Amendments
Today, President George W. Bush signed the Vessel Hull Design Protection Act Amendments (VHDPA) of 2008 into law. The new law will provide boat manufacturers with increased protection from intellectual property violations that occur through hull splashing.
NMMA has been working diligently through three sessions of Congress over six years to strengthen and clarify the Vessel Hull Design Protection Act of 1998, which was the first industrial design protection statute of its kind. In the upcoming months, NMMA will provide additional guidance to members on how to register designs under VHDPA. Intellectual Property Law
Earlier this week, the “Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act of 2008,” more commonly known as the PRO-IP Act, was signed into law by President George W. Bush. PRO-IP strengthens protection for businesses, workers and consumers against counterfeiting and piracy concerns, both domestically and internationally.

“This is an enormous victory for this country’s innovators and a wake-up call for foreign counterfeiters who believe they can steal our ideas with impunity,” said Senator Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), one of the bill’s authors. “American businesses lose $250 billion every year because of intellectual property theft. This new enforcement regime will treat the theft of American ideas as the serious threat to our economy that it is.”

NMMA has been a strong proponent of this legislation, which has been in the works for more than a year. In addition, during ABC 2008, a number of NMMA members met with Senator Bayh to voice their concerns on this issue.
