Big Yacht Show Marks Start of SoCal Spring Boating Activities

Early entries in this year’s Newport Boat Show -- scheduled April 15-19 in Newport Beach -- prove that Southern California’s top dealers continue to look to Newport to show their biggest and most luxurious yachts.
Dubbed the West's ultimate "Big Boat" boat show, the Newport Boat Show signals the unofficial opening of prime boating season every spring in Southern California. Presented in the picturesque setting of Lido Marina Village, the show attracts boating enthusiasts and qualified potential buyers from all over the United States.

The Newport show offers the latest models -- from luxury mega-yachts to coastal cruisers, passage-making trawlers, medium-range sportfishing boats, electric bay boats and sailboats -- and the most innovative marine equipment, engines, generators, electronics and accessories.

The Marlow 85 Tri-Deck Motoryacht, SISU, will be presented by Ardell Yachts, with an asking price of just under $4 million. SISU features an advanced composite hull with Kevlar construction and features three staterooms plus crew quarters, a beautiful teak interior, a forward main deck, a country galley and dining area, Twin CAT diesels, stabilizers, and bow and stern thrusters. SISU has a range of 3,000
nautical miles and comes with numerous custom features.

Emerald Pacific Yachts, the West Coast dealer for Horizon Yachts, will show the brand-new Horizon 73 -- making its Southern California debut at Newport. This sleek motoryacht offers exceptional privacy and comfort, with three staterooms and two heads forward, plus crew or guest accommodations aft. Among its many features, the Horizon 73 offers heated granite floors, Sub-Zero refrigerators and freezers, a dive platform, five flat-screen televisions, a surround sound system, satellite TV receivers and a barbecue -- all for a price just under $3 million.

Also making its debut at the show is the new Johnson 75 motoryacht (priced at $3.895 million), presented by Art Brooks Sea Co., the West Coast dealer for Johnson Yachts. The all-new Johnson 75 is equipped with every option, including a fishing cockpit. Powered by 1,500 hp MTU common rail diesel engines for peak performance and efficiency, this boat easily cruises at 25-plus knots on a very solid platform. Standard equipment includes stabilizers, bow and stern thrusters, underwater exhaust, a high-gloss interior, granite countertops, LCD flat screen televisions in each stateroom, full electronics and a water-maker. With four staterooms plus crew quarters, this boat easily accommodates eight guests -- and crewmembers. With a new design, the Johnson 75 is an ideal all-purpose yacht for West Coast boaters.

McKinna Yachts is debuting its 62 McKinna Sport Yacht, newly arrived from China. Featured on the cover of the April issue of Sea Magazine, the 2009 McKinna 62 is a new concept -- taking the best elements of an express cruising yacht and adding a cockpit for sportfishing, dining or entertaining. The boat has a bait tank, rod holders, rocket launchers, a fighting chair and outriggers, and it can reach 33 knots with its twin 1,000 hp C18 CAT diesels. The McKinna 62 also features a full standup engine room with 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom. Amenities include six entertainment centers with LCD TVs, (two are 42-inch screens, on lifts), a huge bow with sun pads, upper and lower salons, a high-gloss African cherry interior, a full bar in the galley, full-size Sub-Zero refrigerators and two freezer drawers, granite countertops and marble sole in the heads. The special price for the Newport show is $1.95 million.

Chuck Hovey Yachts will premiere the new Fleming 65, a Tony Fleming-designed traditional long-range cruising pilothouse motoryacht. The Fleming 65 is equipped with complete Furuno NavNet 3 navigational equipment, the latest, most advanced
technology satellite television system, four LCD televisions and full entertainment centers, an outdoor barbecue, an ice-maker, a refrigerator and freezer, ovens, granite countertops, teak and holly sole, and a teak interior. Powered by twin 800 hp MAN diesel engines, the Fleming 65 is built for cruising long distances, such as from Alaska to South America, in total comfort and security.

Orange Coast Yachts, the exclusive dealer for Ocean Alexander yachts in California, will unveil the 2010 80 Ocean Alexander Sky Lounge motoryacht. Priced at $4.1 million, the new model has an extra-large galley and dinette area, all teak wood, three staterooms plus crew quarters. The OA 80 is all set for sportfishing and cruising. One of the most luxurious true sportfishing boats on the market, the Ed Monk Jr.-designed OA 80 has a top speed of 18 knots, cruises at 15 and has a 20-foot beam, hydraulic stabilizers plus bow and stern thrusters, five control stations and nine LCD televisions and entertainment centers. Orange Coast Yachts will also debut a new brand, Ovation, and display other Ocean Alexander models -- including the OA 64 (brokerage) and the OA 62 Sports Sedan.

Stan Miller Yachts will show an impressive collection of 22 Hatteras, Cabo and Grand Banks yachts at the show -- including a brokerage Hatteras 64 motoryacht. This nearly new vessel features five staterooms plus crew quarters and is loaded with options, including a cherry wood interior, an ice-maker, a barbecue, entertainment centers and four LCD televisions. The Hatteras 64 luxury motoryacht cruises at 26 knots.

Crow’s Nest Yachts will have a large display, dominated by the new $3.4 million Viking 67 Sports Cruiser, a European-style cruiser ideal for trips to San Juan Islands or Cabo San Lucas. Crow’s Nest will also display the Viking 60 Bad Company Edition, the thoroughbred of West Coast sportfishing boats, designed by Team Bad Company and Steve Lassley (who will be present at the show). The Bad Company Edition is a turn-key West Coast sportfisher with bait tanks, a tower, custom bow rails and a fighting chair included -- plus sonar, radar and an Eskimo ice-maker.

Holiday Marine Sales is showing the Symbol 59 Classic, with three staterooms, three heads, a covered walk-around Portuguese bridge, a cherry wood interior, granite countertops and twin 715 hp CAT diesel engines. With a cruising speed of 16 knots (and a top speed of 20 knots), the Jack Sarin-designed Symbol 59 is ideal for cruising the Pacific Northwest, Mexico and anywhere in between.

Primetime Yachts, which just became the West Coat distributor for Vicem Yachts, a builder of Turkish-built luxury Downeast-style yachts, will show the Vicem 52 Flybridge. With hand-crafted mahogany interiors, beautiful wooden inlays in the sole and granite countertops in the galley, this is an elegant boat -- but it’s also a fast, powerful vessel that can go nearly 40 knots and can handle big seas. The Vicem 52 is full of Old World charm and features a big teak-trimmed cockpit that is ideal for sportfishing, a hydraulic swimstep, three flat-screen televisions, HDTV, an entertainment center, a barbecue in the cockpit and twin MAN diesel engines.

In other standout exhibits, Compass Point Yachts will present the new
Maritimo 60 motoryacht. Newport Boats will display the new Azimut 62 motoryacht along with a lineup of Sea Ray and Meridian vessels. California

Coast Yachts will be showing a big lineup of Sunseeker yachts, including the Manhattan 60 and the 72 Predator. H&S Yachts will be showing a number of Navigator and Silverton motoryachts, along with sailing vessels from Beneteau and Jeanneau. Hallmark Yachts will be representing one of the event’s largest offerings: a Queenship 98.
